December update:

  • 23.12.18 This latest tsunami was located in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, which is 1,600km from Sulawesi where our current response is taking place after the September quake and tsunami near Palu.
  • More than 500 buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged.
  • The death toll is rising from 222, with people still missing.
  • Tearfund partners in Indonesia are keeping a close watch on the situation while continuing with their emergency response work in devastated Sulawesi.

What happened in September?

  • Walls of water up to 6m high and a magnitude 7.5 earthquake wreaked havoc.
  • Search and rescue teams had difficulty accessing worst-hit areas.
  • More than 70,000 houses are reported to be damaged, forcing tens of thousands of people to live in shelters and tents.
  • The death toll stands at more than 2100.

How we're helping in Sulawesi after the September tsunami

Tearfund’s partner continues to respond and is unaffected by announcements by the Indonesian Government that foreign aid agencies needed to leave the area. Our response will continue as normal.

This is because Tearfund’s model is to support and empower the work of locally based partners and our partner in Sulawesi is a local Indonesian-registered aid agency. All staff are Indonesians and are permitted to respond to the needs in the affected areas.

Your donation will continue to help our partner in Sulawesi:

  • Provide ongoing, lifesaving medical care
  • Provide tents, medicine and equipment to care for the sick and traumatised
  • Homes, hospitals, bridges, water and power supplies were badly damaged or completely destroyed - we were able to get help to the worst affected areas, “Most people will work where the media gathers [and provides international attention], but we have a heart to focus on the people who are hardest to reach”. Tearfund's partner in Sulawesi.

Your donation will help us to continue to support rebuilding and the ongoing needs of the worst affected people, thank you.

Tearfund will respond to the crisis as a member of the Integral Alliance
