Marwa's Story

“My name is Marwa* and I am 27 years old. I have five children, my youngest is 7 months and my eldest is 11 years old. We came here to Lebanon because of the war in Syria four years ago. We used to have a cow farm. I saw bombs, shelling, people dying and ruins all around us. Every day I heard stories of families losing their children and I was so scared of losing one of mine.

When we came here we had nothing except each other. We left everything we owned back in Syria. Some people who went to the church told us about how their church could help us. We reached out to them and they came and met with us.

“When I first met the Pastors I was depressed because of everything I had seen and been through. Soon after we started receiving things from the church like food vouchers, milk and diapers. We still receive these things today to help us.”

My kids were affected by the war and even now when they hear an airplane fly by or fireworks at night, they think there is bombing and shelling. My hope for the future is for my children to get an education and to have no more sadness.”

With the generosity of people like you, Tearfund regularly responds to the needs of thousands of people, like Marwa and her family, every year who are devastated by natural disasters or affected by protracted conflicts.

What we're doing

For almost five decades we’ve been assisting people in disasters and conflicts around the world, working to prevent death, to alleviate suffering and the loss of livelihoods.

  • When a disaster or conflict strikes, we respond through the Integral Alliance — a global network of Christian organisations that collaborate and share resources to effectively and quickly help those in need to recover.

In disasters and conflict situations, our typical response is to:

  • Assess the situation.

  • Provide immediate emergency relief supplies.

  • Rebuild communities and restore livelihoods.

  • Provide ongoing support, including support for the mental health and psychosocial needs of people affected by trauma.

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the response.

  • Build future resilience and risk reduction to disasters and conflict.

  • Build climate resilience in communities at risk of ongoing natural disasters and climate change.
