Right now, families in the DRC are fleeing for their lives. They’ve lost everything—homes, belongings, and access to safe water. You can help provide life-saving aid today.

A recent escalation in conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has resulted in hundreds of thousands of people having to flee their homes searching for safety. Taking refuge in temporary camps, schools and churches, overwhelming numbers of these displaced families now lack access to safe drinking water, food and healthcare with rising rates of malnutrition and diseases being reported.

Your donation today can help provide clean water and essential supplies to families who are fleeing to temporary camps.

What is happening in the DRC?

  • Severe human rights abuse has been reported, women and children are being attacked, and key healthcare infrastructure has been destroyed as a paramilitary group called M23 has advanced against government forces and taken control of key cities in the eastern regions.

  • Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes looking for safety. Heartbreakingly, some large displaced persons camps outside Goma have been dismantled by the invading forces, meaning the inhabitants have had to flee again, and are now scattered across the region.

  • Displaced families are seeking safety in temporary camps, churches and schools.

  • The living conditions of displaced families living in temporary shelter is alarming with significant shortages in water, food and healthcare.

  • Cases of severe malnutrition and infectious diseases such as cholera are increasing rapidly.

  • A funding freeze is making this crisis even worse. Last year, 70% of the DRC’s humanitarian aid came from the U.S. With that support now on hold, families are being left without the help they desperately need.

How is Tearfund responding?

Our partners are responding to this humanitarian crisis right now. One of our partners on the ground is Tearfund’s team in the DRC and they’re distributing clean water every day to displaced families, as well as helping them buy food and clothes. Our other partner, Medair, is providing mobile health services and distributing health kits to prevent the spread of disease.

Rose's story

Rose is sheltering in a school with her children, alongside hundreds of other displaced families. She has been receiving water from our partner.
‘I was living in a camp before the attacks but we had to leave. I’m scared for the future but now that we have somewhere to shelter ourselves and some water to drink, I have hope we can survive.’

With your help, our partners can continue to provide water and essential supplies to displaced families.
